Part of ensuring excellent senior assisted living services is helping residents maintain their independence. Toward this goal, we offer the many activities of WellStar, our signature program for physical, social, spiritual and emotional wellness.Yet the feature we brag about the most, the one that attracts the most attention, is our atmosphere of love, of community, built one loving relationship at a time. By this, we can—and do—offer the very best in senior assisted living, memory care and respite care.
Our entire staff is engaged in finding ways to build that spirit of community. Even for respite care residents (here for a short recuperative stay) or our retreat residents (here for a trial stay), there’s the promise of new friendships. And for the most tender among us, our memory care residents, each day presents opportunity to stimulate the brain and find moments of spontaneous joy.
Our community is conveniently located in the Wingfield Springs neighborhood of Sparks, east of Reno. Reno-Sparks is just 59 miles from Lake Tahoe, and adjacent to Sun Valley, Nevada.
A House is not a Home without a Dog
MorningStar of Sparks has added a purely adorable new resident, Willow. This Golden Doodle came to us from a breeder in Golden Valley NV. She’s pictured at 8 weeks old, but is growing by the day, of course. This gentle little sweetheart is already learning to walk with her leash, loves to play with (and talk to!) her toys. A very big hit with all of our human residents.
Joy on a Plate: The Talents of Chef Ben Larimer
Introducing…Ben Larimer, Executive Chef, with 30 years of natural (and nurtured) talent now in service to our residents.
Ben discovered the joy of cooking at 15 in his home state of Oklahoma. While earning his first degree in business, he invested two summers at Tall Timber in Durango, CO (one of 31 five-star, five-diamond resorts in the U.S.). “That’s where my culinary education really began, serving under an Italian chef. Everything was from scratch, fresh from the garden or helicoptered in.”
From there, he moved to hospitality management, working the front of the house, and apprenticing under a Belgium pastry chef. For seven years he logged miles as a corporate training chef for a national senior living company.
Why did senior living draw him in? “I love putting ‘Joy on a Plate’ for so many differing palates.” Ben’s goal at MorningStar is nothing less than “to impress our residents every single day, while taking care of them nutritionally.” That may just involve running to Raley’s in the middle of dinner service to retrieve that one missing ingredient. “It’s another way I can show respect to my elders.”
Ben is a Certified Dietary Manager, made possible through two years of schooling in nutrition and therapeutic diets. He’s also two months away from the designation of Certified Executive Chef.
His recipes have won him national recognition: In 2003 and 2004, he took top honors in the American Royal World Series of BBQ Invitational. At the time, his sauce was commercially sold in 200 stores as “Mr. Micah’s Grubbin BBQ.” In 2009, Top Chef’s “Quaker Oats Quickfire Challenge” awarded Ben first place (among 3500 entrants) for his oatmeal-crusted chile relleno, stuffed with mango, goat cheese and shrimp, served with green chili ranchero. “Love that kick,” said a grinning judge. See it on Bravo TV.

In 2011, Ben took second place on Iron Chef for his Ying Yang Salad with roasted red pepper vinaigrette, cilantro and vanilla reduction, competing against 82 celebrated chefs.
And now Ben is all ours! Do we sound possessive? Well, for good reason; he’s a marvel.
