Profile

I’m excited to come to work every day. This is not just a job to me; it is an extension of my family. Our entire staff know the names of even family members who walk through our doors. And they love the residents as if they were their own grandparents. You never walk down a hallway without seeing a smiling face or polite hello. (Wellness Director)

MorningStar of Sparks is dedicated to creating a true home, where your retirement years can be carefree. Offering a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, our team works hard to offer our residents a quality of life other assisted living facilities simply cannot match. At MorningStar of Sparks, we’re proud to offer 128 bright suites for independent living, and 80 for assisted living. Within our Reflections Neighborhood, we also offer 32 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care for residents with memory impairment from Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia.

In contrast to other senior assisted living facilities, MorningStar’s exceptional architecture and design will impress you from the first.  Our graciously-appointed spaces are extensions of your private suite, spiffed and ready to receive your callers any time.

Part of ensuring excellent senior assisted living services is helping residents maintain their independence.  Toward this goal, we offer the many activities of WellStar, our signature program for physical, social, spiritual and emotional wellness.Yet the feature we brag about the most, the one that attracts the most attention, is our atmosphere of love, of community, built one loving relationship at a time. By this, we can—and do—offer the very best in senior assisted living, memory care and respite care.

Our entire staff is engaged in finding ways to build that spirit of community. Even for respite care residents (here for a short recuperative stay) or our retreat residents (here for a trial stay), there’s the promise of new friendships.  And for the most tender among us, our memory care residents, each day presents opportunity to stimulate the brain and find moments of spontaneous joy.

Our community is conveniently located in the Wingfield Springs neighborhood of Sparks, east of Reno.  Reno-Sparks is just 59 miles from Lake Tahoe, and adjacent to Sun Valley, Nevada.

Joy on a Plate:  The Talents of Chef Ben Larimer

mss ben chef 267x300 MorningStar of SparksIntroducing…Ben Larimer, Executive Chef, with 30 years of natural (and nurtured) talent now in service to our residents.

Ben discovered the joy of cooking at 15 in his home state of Oklahoma.  While earning his first degree in business, he invested two summers at Tall Timber in Durango, CO (one of 31 five-star, five-diamond resorts in the U.S.).  “That’s where my culinary education really began, serving under an Italian chef.  Everything was from scratch, fresh from the garden or helicoptered in.”

From there, he moved to hospitality management, working the front of the house, and apprenticing under a Belgium pastry chef. For seven years he logged miles as a corporate training chef for a national senior living company.

mss ben bbq 300x207 MorningStar of SparksWhy did senior living draw him in?  “I love putting ‘Joy on a Plate’ for so many differing palates.”  Ben’s goal at MorningStar is nothing less than “to impress our residents every single day, while taking care of them nutritionally.”  That may just involve running to Raley’s in the middle of dinner service to retrieve that one missing ingredient.  “It’s another way I can show respect to my elders.”

Ben is a Certified Dietary Manager, made possible through two years of schooling in nutrition and therapeutic diets.  He’s also two months away from the designation of Certified Executive Chef.

mss ben topchef tournyc 300x171 MorningStar of SparksHis recipes have won him national recognition:  In 2003 and 2004, he took top honors in the American Royal World Series of BBQ Invitational.  At the time, his sauce was commercially sold in 200 stores as “Mr. Micah’s Grubbin BBQ.”  In 2009, Top Chef’s “Quaker Oats Quickfire Challenge” awarded Ben first place (among 3500 entrants) for his oatmeal-crusted chile relleno, stuffed with mango, goat cheese and shrimp, served with green chili ranchero.  “Love that kick,” said a grinning judge.  See it on Bravo TV.

In 2011, Ben took second place on Iron Chef for his Ying Yang Salad with roasted red pepper vinaigrette, cilantro and vanilla reduction, competing against 82 celebrated chefs.
And now Ben is all ours!  Do we sound possessive?  Well, for good reason; he’s a marvel.
