Marilynn Elizabeth Logsdon Doenges – A Century of Extraordinary Life

Marilynn's story begins on November 15, 1922, in East Canton, Ohio, where she entered the world in her grandmother's house. Growing up with two sisters, Miriam and Gwen, Marilynn embarked on a childhood marked by unique home residences, including above a funeral home and in a cemetery in Independence, MO. Such experiences shaped her early years, setting the stage for an extraordinary life.
Skipping junior high, Marilynn attended four high schools, graduating at 16 from Northeast High School in Kansas City, MO, in 1939. In her formative years, Marilynn displayed a clear aspiration to become a nurse. Despite initial setbacks due to her young age, she eventually attended Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in Canton, OH.
Volunteering with the Red Cross during her nursing education, Marilynn enlisted in the Army immediately upon graduation. In 1944, at 21, she became a Registered Nurse and soon after joined the Army Nurse Corps, embarking on a 19-month journey of life-altering experiences.
Assigned to the Fifth Service Command at Ashford General Hospital, WV, a Neurovascular Surgical Center, Marilynn's duties ranged from orthopedics to medical, neurological, and spinal cord care. The hospital received soldiers from the Battle of the Bulge, just days from the front lines. Marilynn's European service began on the Ile de France, converted into a troop transport.
Traversing Europe, Marilynn's nursing skills were honed by diverse medical situations. Her travels took her to iconic places like London, Rome and the Swiss Alps. After the war, she continued her nursing career in the United States, eventually earning a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Colorado using her GI Bill benefits.
Marilynn met her husband, Dean, at the university, and they were married for nearly 50 years. A devoted mother of five, she balanced a nursing career with raising a family. Beyond her roles in surgical and psychiatric nursing, Marilynn was an educator, teaching at nursing schools and co-writing influential nursing books.
Marilynn's life extended beyond her professional achievements. She was an active member of her community, supporting widows' groups and volunteering with AARP. Her passion for education, counseling and nursing left an indelible mark, recognized through numerous awards, including induction into the Colorado Nurses Association Hall of Fame.
Today, at 101 years, Marilynn is a living legend, a source of inspiration and wisdom for all who know her. Her remarkable journey, from the battlefields of World War II to the halls of academia, embodies the spirit of service, resilience and dedication that defines a life well-lived.
