MorningStar Senior Living of Kirkland Raving Fans Visited by Seattle Seawolves

KIRKLAND, WA (July 23, 2024) — MorningStar Senior Living of Kirkland, a community for active seniors, received a surprise visit from the Seattle Seawolves prompted by its growing fan base of MorningStar residents.
The Iron & Steel Bistro/Bar at MorningStar is more than a favorite watering hole for residents. It becomes a raucous gathering of superfans whenever the Seattle Seawolves are playing. A group of female residents were jazzed to discover professional rugby on the screen one day. While not fully understanding the rules of the game, their enthusiasm was genuine as was their admiration for the dashing players seen tearing across the field. “We just got enthralled,” Kathy Meehan said. “We didn’t understand it all, but bought fan T-shirts anyway, calling ourselves the ‘She-Wolves.’”
MorningStar bartender, Arthur Pennock, was charmed by the women’s interest, sending word on Instagram to Seawolves’ Public Relations. The response was immediate. “We’d love to come over with some players and teach MorningStar the basics of the game.”
Days later six burly players strode into the community to thunderous applause, spending an hour taking questions about this demanding, full-contact sport. The Seawolves have been competing in Major League Rugby since 2018 and were the second team in US sports history to win two league championships in the first two years.
Known alternatively as rugby union football or rugby union, players attempt to score by carrying a ball similar in shape to the American football across the field to their opponent’s goal or by kicking it over a bar fixed between two posts.
Legend has it that in 1823 during a game of football in the town of Rugby, England, young William Ellis broke with convention by picking up the ball and running straight toward the opposition’s goal. Two centuries later, rugby has become one of the world’s most popular sports, impressive by the rough continuous play without protective gear.
Gifted with free tickets, MorningStar residents wasted no time in taking the community bus to Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, south of Seattle, to watch a game from the stands.
