Glimpses of the Heart

ExitTiana JacksonSenior Executive DirectorWhen I ponder those who have most influenced my long career in senior care, I think of Dee, a former colleague whose passion, respect, model of servant-leadership has motivated and shaped me. And of course I have met many spectacular seniors who have taught me many life lessons through their stories.

ExitArmin AlcantaraAssoc. Executive DirectorMy Grandmother (who the grandkids called “Mama”) has always been close to my heart. She taught how to care deeply and appreciate life and all that we have in this life. She is the reason I have served in senior living for 15 years. Seniors teach me patience, empathy, wisdom and respect through their stories. In return, I love to create special moments for them. Faith has always been a big part of my life. I wanted to join MorningStar after hearing how the company was named, and the values and vision that derived from that name.

ExitJennifer Pome’eWellness DirectorGrowing up I vowed not to follow my parents’ career choice, both of whom were nurses. However, when I went to school for Certified Nursing Aide training, I fell in love with working with the senior population, so much so I decided to go on to nursing school after all. I discovered that too many seniors do not have family or friends to advocate or care for them. This evoked in me a strong urge to be that person who shows residents just how much they are loved, valued and never alone.

ExitErma SkaggsReflections AdministratorI believe life is about a calling—a calling to serve. The only place to find that is from within. Moving hearts and inspiring lives require a deep commitment. I work to first understand the needs of seniors then strive to meet those needs. In return, seniors teach me that youthfulness is less a time of life and more a state of mind, an attitude that encourages you to take calculated risks and make mistakes until you learn from them. They also teach me to smile while you still have teeth! And above all, value family who will be with you in the toughest situations.

ExitCarina JacobsonDirector Community RelationsGrandpa Tom was a proud Navy veteran who served in WWII. As a child, I was enthralled with his stories, awed by his courageous service at such a young age. He shared his memories with us each Sunday after church. Seniors teach us much about the past but more so how to engage in the future, with real world examples and a guiding perspective. MorningStar’s core values are the same ones Grandpa taught me so it’s as if his voice is with me in all of the work I do and every resident with whom I connect.
