Annual Conference Turned Mission Trip
MorningStar Takes Executive Directors to Mexico in Service to the Poor
TIJUANA, MEXICO (April 16, 2024) – Marking its 21st year as a senior living developer, owner and operator, MorningStar Senior Living has shaped its brand around a commitment to philanthropic initiatives.
Rather than taking a conventional approach to the 2024 Annual Conference, Founder/CEO Ken Jaeger brought his Executive Directors to Tijuana, Mexico, to build homes for those struggling to survive in the outer colonias.
In the preceding months, 40 MorningStar communities worked to raise nearly $60,000, hosting everything from a sock hop to candygrams to pie-in-the-face booths. The entire amount went toward the purchase of building materials and furnishings for three homes.
In April, 45 MorningStar leaders crossed the southern border representing our communities and the Denver Home Office. “For two days we swung hammers and rolled paint, working alongside the receiving families on their new 20’ x 20’ three-room house. We were “Team Trabajo” (trabajo means “work” in Spanish),” says Christine Jaeger, Director of Philanthropy.

In three emotional ceremonies, MorningStar handed families the keys to their fully furnished home, complete with forks in the drawer, a shelf stocked with books, curtains in the windows and a well-stocked pantry.
Some reactions from the Team Trabajo crew…
“One reason for conflict is lack of understanding. This trip gave us understanding to see poverty up close, to put love into action, and help set up families for a better life. An outstanding experience!”
“You felt what these parents were carrying…the weight of the world, to give their children so much more. Then to see that weight lifted when they entered the house, to see the change in them flow to the kids. Theirs were smiles that would light up the world.”
“Incredible…to go from first day awkwardness to the moment we handed over the keys…it was love and hugs and everywhere gratitude.”
Through the MorningStar Foundation, the company finds creative ways like this to act upon its vision to be “servant-minded, purpose-driven leaders in our senior communities and throughout the world.”
